We welcome you to schedule the baptism of your child(ren) here at Jesus the Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Parents and Godparents are required to attend a Baptismal Preparation Class prior to a child’s Baptism.

Baptism Preparation Guidelines

Preparation Classes

Baptism Preparation classes are typically held once a month on Thursday evenings. Parents and Godparents are required to attend prior to a child’s Baptism.

Godparents

Responsibilities and requirements of Godparent(s) for the Sacrament of Baptism

Role of the Godparent(s)

  • Give withness to the Catholic failth by words and actions
  • Present the child for baptism along with the child’s parents
  • Help the child live a Christian life in harmony with baptism
  • Represent the Catholic Church and community of faith
  • Trustworthy witness of the faith who will help the child attain salvation
  • Pray for their godchild
  • Help to celebrate sacramental milestones

Requirements of Godparent(s)

  • While two godparents are preferred, one Catholic godparent, male or female, is sufficient
  • If there are two godparents, must have one male and one female, cannot have two of the same gender
  • Cannot be more than two godparents for one child
  • May not be the mother or father of the child
  • Must be 16 or older
  • Must be a fully initiated Catholic(received the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation)
  • Practices his/her faith; regularly attends Mass
  • If married, they are married according to the laws and practices of the Catholic Church
  • A baptized non-Catholic may serve as a “witness” as long as a Catholic Godparent is present
  • The non-Catholic “witness”should be an active and participating member of his/her Christian community
  • A non-Catholic “witness” will not be listed on the baptismal certificate as a Godparent

Godparent Documentation

    • Copies of his/her Baptism Certificate with notation of First Communion and Confirmation

    • A letter from his/her pastor stating that he/she is in good standing and active in their parish church.

    • Written proof stating he/she has been to a Baptismal Preparation Class

    • Godparents are required to attend a Baptismal Preparation Class
